How To Create A Free Website – That Looks Professional

Some of the best looking and professional websites have been built with a free website builder platform. Today I want to walk you through how to create a free website that looks professional.

The first thing you need to do is to figure out what you want to use your website for and for what purpose. eg: blogging, content writing, niche marketing or personal.

There are a few platforms available you can use to create a free website. But the best one by far is the WordPress website builder platform. So I will walk you through how to create a free website using WordPress.

The Difference Between WordPress.org and WordPress.com

The one major difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org is who hosts your website.

With WordPress.org, You host your own blog or website. WordPress.org is where you’ll find the
free WordPress software that you can download and install on your own
web server.

WordPress.com, on the other hand, it takes care of all of the hostings for you. You don’t have to download software, pay for hosting, or manage a web server.

Both WordPress.org and WordPress.com have pros and cons, depending on your needs.

WordPress.com

If you’re not interested in paying for your own hosting, managing your own web server or paying someone else to handle that for you, you’ll probably want to use WordPress.com. It’s free and easy to set up and you have lots of options for customizing your site.

A few of the cons of using WordPress.com include that your domain will, be by default, “WordPress.com.” which means you will always have the WordPress.com in your URL. You also can’t upload any custom themes, plugins or modify the PHP code in your site.

While WordPress.com is free to set up, they do offer several premium upgrades, including domain name registration (if you don’t want WordPress.com in your domain name), the ability to upload videos and if you want to use their premium themes.

WordPress.org

Using the downloaded version of WordPress from WordPress.org opens up more control and flexibility for your WordPress site, but it also means more responsibility. Using a self-hosted version of WordPress means you can use your own domain name, upload and install themes and plugins, edit the code in your site and have access to your site’s database (or files).

Most of the showcase sites you see on the WordPress site showcase are the self-hosted version of WordPress.org since many of them have a unique functionality or a custom-made design.

So from here, we can see that WordPress.org has better more professional tools to build a website. Although WordPress.org is not exactly 100% free. You will still have to pay for a good domain name, and web hosting. These are minimal costs but needed.

First, you will need to download your new WordPress.org website. WordPress.org download. Once you have downloaded your website it’s time to choose a domain name.

So think of a name for your website that is relevant to the content you will be writing about on your website.

You may not be able to get the exact name you have chosen as someone else may have taken it. The register list will let you know which names are available that are best suited to your first choice.

Register your Domain name.

Now it’s time to choose your web hosting. Below is a list of some of the best hosting services. Try to use a web hosting site that includes an SSL certificate. This will make your site more secure for your visitors. Your URL will then start with HTTPS:// not just HTTP://. This is also welcomed by the search engines.

Bluehost

Go Daddy

SiteGround

WP Engine

Liquid Web

Once you have your web hosting and Domain name in place it’s time to set up your website.

The Control Panel in WordPressWordpress back office dashboard

The control panel or dashboard is where you can set up your website to your liking. First, you will need to set up a theme.

A theme is a software package that governs the look and feel of your site. It sets the sizes, fonts, colors, and locations of everything on your site.

There are 2 types of themes free and paid (premium) But as we are trying to build a free website it is better you go with the free option. The free options available are very good themes.

Choosing a theme can take some time as there are thousands of themes to choose from. Choose a theme that best identifies with the topic (niche) you want to promote on your website.

A theme can let you customize the way you want your website to look. For instance, you can make a custom menu that will appear above your headline title. In this menu, you can create a home page button by default. This will link back to itself. So if a visitor is on another one of your pages or posts and decides they want to go back to your homepage they can just click the home button.

Changing Default Settings

Through the dashboard menu, you can control everything about your website. You can choose to have or not to have:

  • Who can post to your website
  • Home static page or a blog roll page.
  • Comments on your site.
  • Moderate comments
  • Categories
  • Widgets
  • Background image
  • Homepage image
  • A logo
  • and many other options.

The best part is that you can change these settings whenever you want. So if your original ideas on how your site is to be managed do not work out you can always change it later.

Plugins

Plugins are the strength of WordPress.org. If there is some specific thing that you want to do on your site, there is probably a plugin to do it. Plugins vary in functionality from spam blockers and site security (at a minimum please install these),  There are roughly 50,000+ plugins listed at the WordPress.org site and many more around the internet. Many are free, but there are some plugins you have to pay for.

The thing to remember about plugins is to always check out the plugin before you install one. Look to see how many other people are using the plugin and make sure it is compatible with your (up-to-date) WordPress website. Also, check out when it was last updated. Doing this will give you an indicator of whether the plugin is all it’s cracked up to be. Below is a screenshot of what I mean.an screenshot of a plugin

Start Adding Content

OK, now that your website is set up to your liking and for the purpose, you want it for. It is time to start adding content.

Pages you will need to make first:

  • Privacy Policy
  • About me/us
  • Affiliate Disclosure (If promoting affiliate links)
  • Terms and conditions

Make the above as pages, not posts that way you can add them to one of your custom menus.

Writing posts

The next thing to do is to start writing content for your posts. What you write about is totally up to yourself and your niche (topic). Always stay on track and write content that is relevant to your niche.

Once you have your content written you can add media in the form of images and videos. Now start to market your website and get the word out. One way of doing this is by adding a social media share plugin. This way there is no need to leave your website you can forward your posts straight from your website to your social media pages.

Another Option – How to Create a Free Website

I belong to a training program that can teach you all of the above and guide you through it with text training and video training. There is a great community where you can ask questions if you get stuck also with live chat.

You will have to do some of the work yourself but you will not have to choose your own hosting.  Hosting and SSL is included. So is site speed and security. To take a quick look at the other features of this website you can click on the link below. Not to forget with the free option you will not get 1 website but 2.
