How to get accepted in affiliate programs is not as easy as most people think, especially for beginners to affiliate marketing.
Most affiliate marketers don’t give a second thought to whether or not they will be approved to an affiliate program once they have applied. They automatically think they will be approved and are flabbergasted when they get turned down for a program.
What affiliate managers require from us is the experience to be able to promote their products. They will want to know how much traffic you are receiving to your website, this can be pretty much zero to a new website.
Most affiliate managers that have the final say as to you being approved be it a network program or private program will want to know where and how you are going to market their or their client’s products. This will be outlined in their application process. They may want you to list the ways you plan to market their products and to what particular market and audience.
Tactics to get approved
When applying to an affiliate program, be as honest as possible. Don’t try to pull the wool over their eyes, they have heard it all before and this will definitely get you disapproved.
Make sure everything on your website is up to date
You need a website to be approved, so make sure you have a completed website with plenty of unique content. Do this before applying for any affiliate programs. Affiliate managers will want to look at your website to see if it meets their standards.
Apply to the relevant programs for your niche
Always make sure you are applying for a program that is within your niche. You don’t want to apply to an affiliate food program when your niche is in baseball.
Always fill in the bio and/or description of yourself
If there is a box to fill out for your bio on the application, always fill it in. Giving as much information as possible will help your status. In your bio say why you want to be, or already are an affiliate marketer. Why you will be good as an affiliate marketer. Why you particularly want to be in their “such-and-such” program. Explain your business plan.

Read the affiliate programs Terms and Conditions
Always read the terms and conditions and follow them. This may seem like common sense but if you do not follow the terms and conditions, you will be disapproved.
Quality not Quantity
You will need the best quality content on your website, more is not better in this instance. Provide as much information for your readers and help them with their questions by writing the best possible answers. You do not want your website classed as low quality, as this also will be a case for disapproval.
What promotional methods to use
This is an important part of the application. Affiliate managers will surely disapprove you if you don’t let them know what methods you are going to use to promote their products. Here is a rundown of where you can market the affiliate programs products.
. Comparisons….. This means comparing products by a review. One product against another.
. Content Marketing….. To include an affiliate link or links to a product on your website content
. Display Advertising…..This can be as simple as a banner on your website.
. Email Marketing….. Email your subscribers of a product.
. PPC Campaigns….. Paid advertising with Google and Bing and other services.
. Social Media….. Posting to social networks including Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and more.
. On your shopping website….. If you have a shopping website, you can display products there.
. Through friends and family….. Word of mouth through your family and friends.
The 2 Step process
There is usually a 2 step process of being accepted by affiliate networks. Firstly you have to apply to the network itself as they host many of the programs that you might want to apply for. I have found that most networks will accept new applications.
This is true if you abide by the processes I have outlined here. The programs that are being hosted by the network give authority for the network manager to choose who will be approved.
Once you have been accepted by a network which can take anything from a few hours to a few days to hear back from them. This is the time to apply to the actual programs you want to promote. So now is the time to apply all the above in your application.
There are of course many private and network programs that will accept you without being subject to approval. To find an affiliate program in your niche, type into Google or any search engine your niche + affiliate programs. This will bring up quite a few options for you to look through and many do not require approval.
One network that is worth joining is
they have programs that do not need approval at all.
Lastly, I would like to point out that if you are declined by an affiliate program don’t be upset, annoyed or angry. Take it on the chin. There are plenty more affiliate sites out there on the web that you can apply to.
If you are new to affiliate marketing and have a new website, and are disapproved. Don’t give up with that particular affiliate program. You may have only been declined because you have not got much traffic going to your website as yet. Once you have more traffic you can apply again. Ways to get more traffic.
I have another related article you can take a look at here. This article lists many of the affiliate networks you can apply to.
Another related article I wrote is here is about the best affiliate programs and payment terms.
So lets recap how you will promote an affiliate network product.
. Content Marketing
. Display Advertising
. Email Marketing
. PPC Campaigns
. Social Media
. On your shopping website
. Through friends and family
By all means, if you can think of other ways to promote a network affiliate product then please do. The ones I have listed apart from PPC are all free methods. You can of course use paid advertising like solo ads for example. It all depends on your own budget.
I hope this article has helped you understand what affiliate managers need from you to get their approval.
