How to Start a Blog for Free

I have written quite a few blogs and have not yet written one for my readers on how to start a blog. So the time has come for me to write an article on how to start a blog for free.

Most people start a blog because they want to earn money from it. There are the chosen few who build a blog and write for personal pleasure or for a hobby. The difference is easy, one wants to monetize their blog and the other one doesn’t.

CHOOSE A FREE WEBSITE – OR CHOOSE A PAID WEBSITE – CHOOSE FREE WEBSITE HOSTING                                                                         THE CHOICE IS ALL YOURS

What I want to show you is how do bloggers make money from blogging. Most bloggers are trying to strive to make money in any niche and gain a real profit from it. This is very hard to understand for the beginner blogger. You may ask where do I start? What is the first thing I need to do? All these questions will be spinning around in your head.

How to Start a Blog For Free

The first thing you need to ask yourself is whether you want a sub-domain or your own domain. You may ask what is the difference? There’s a huge difference! apart from the price and here’s why I mention it.

Which one of the following looks better?dominoes with the word blog

1. Example…..mywebsite.com…..

2. Example…..mywebsite.blogspot.com…..

No.1 obviously looks the better of the 2 domains.

It’s not just the looks of the domain though it also impacts on your visitors and customers. A sub-domain looks and feels less trustworthy to your visitors. It also makes you look less committed to your website and your cause. It will make your website look less professional too.

With a free website platform, you will be getting free hosting and you will not have to pay for your own domain. If you are just starting out and want to try your hand at blogging, a free website would make perfect sense. This can always be transferred to a paid host later on. So Let’s look at the free blog sites that are the most popular.

Free Blog Sites

Blogger.com (Blogspot)

This free website is probably the most popular blogging website, not only is it popular but it is owned by Google. The reason it is so popular is that you can do most of the things with a blogger website that you can with a self-hosted website. The main difference is that you will be using a sub-domain and you will never own it.

Webs
You have the choice of a free website or a premium website if you choose Webs. The free website has many features including access to analytics. You can also integrate your social media sharing and follow me icons with Webs.

Weebly
As with most free blogging websites, there isn’t very much space with Weebly, It’s ideal for personal blogs. It is very easy to use platform with great versatility and speed.

WordPress.com
Not to be confused with WordPress.org which is a self-hosting website platform. WordPress has the feature to allow a store on your site. They promise $100 in advertising free. Payment processor options. Built in spam protection and more.

Wix

Over 500 templates to choose from and an easy and innovative drag and drop website editor. Wix is mobile optimized so you can access your website from anywhere. Wix has built-in SEO, so your site can be found on Google. This is a great feature for those who want to do content marketing. Wix includes apps such as live chat, newsletter, email marketing, testimonials, and more. Included with a Wix free website is SSL. This is a really great feature to keep you and your visitors feeling safe whilst on your website. Wix.com blogging features seem to be never-ending.

Squarespace

Appealing pre-built website templates. Squarespace has an easy drag and drop editor. It has many other features from template switching to access of Google fonts. An ideal website for e-commerce with tools to help you build an awesome website.

Yola

Easy to use drag and drop site builder or Yola will build a website for you. The free option offers the following.

  • 3 Pages
  • 1GB bandwidth
  • 1GB storage

Ghost

Quite a new blogging platform compared to the other choices. Beginner friendly with a flexible user interface. Although Ghost is not completely free it has a 14-day free trial period, I thought I would include it so you can compare the different choices.

I don’t want to put a downer on free website builders, but you are limited to what you can do with your website. This, of course, depends on the free blog site you choose. Some of them also have ads which are out of your control and you cannot remove.

Building Your Website

Once you have chosen which free blog website builder you want to use for your blog. It’s time to start building your blog website.

Firstly you will need to choose a theme. A theme is a template and it guides the way your website will look with or without an image and also what you can do with your website. At this point, you should be able to choose how many sidebars you want I have 1 on my site here. Then there will be widgets to choose from. Widgets let you put a banner for instance in your sidebar without knowing any code. It’s just a matter of copy and pasting. You will be guided through the setting up process of your website with each of the free websites listed, so don’t worry too much about it. Once you have set up your website it’s time to add some content and images, as I said this will all be explained by the website you choose. The example below is for a website that will be using a portfolio for their business. It includes a good image, and you can put the title of your website right there in the middle of the image.

An Obvious Way to Blog is With Affiliate Marketing

If you are a beginner and you are searching for a way to make money from your website, I would strongly recommend you to try either Blogger or WordPress from the list of free blogging sites mentioned above.

To monetize your website you can choose to do various things, but the main one is affiliate marketing. With affiliate marketing, you will be selling other peoples or companies products for a commission.man and a light globe

Here’s the thing unless you are extremely lucky affiliate marketing takes time. It has to be viewed as a long-term adventure not a flash in the pan. In fact, most serious affiliate marketers consider their website or blog as a business. Which it is if you are successful enough to make a living from your website or blog and do it for a full-time job.

To achieve this status of being able to give up your full-time job and work on your website or blog full-time needs extreme commitment. You will also find many stay at home mums who have started their own blogs and become very successful. So as you can see affiliate marketing can be done by anyone.

A very good review of 34 web hosting sites

WordPress.Org

If you do not want a free website with free hosting and a free sub-domain. Then maybe you can choose one that offers far more features. In that case, you will need a web hosting site. (See above for details) Not forgetting a domain name which costs approximately between $13.99 – $15.99 per year on average.

I can strongly recommend WordPress.org. This website is a WordPress.org site, so here you have the proof that this website platform is a good one. One-third of the world have blogs with WordPress.org. so that says something else about it too.

This website is not hosted by any of the aforementioned websites. I am hosted at Wealthy Affiliate. In other words, I do not use any of the free opportunities listed. The reason I am hosted with Wealthy Affiliate is that they are an Affiliate Marketing Training website with their own affiliate program. If you would care to take a look for yourself please do so here.

Wealthy Affiliate doesn’t just offer you 1 website but 2 websites with the free starter program, both hosted within the Wealthy Affiliate platform. If you would like to take a look at a very early stage website I have built you can see it here. It is dedicated to Wealthy Affiliate only.

Blog examples can be seen everywhere on the web. Do a Google search for anything and it will be guaranteed that a few blog posts will pop up. That is the name of the game in affiliate marketing. You want to be seen in the search engines. You want to be seen and be seen on page 1.
