Is The Amazon Mechanical Turk A Scam

Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) is a crowdsourcing marketplace enabling individuals and businesses (known as Requesters) to engage with a 24/7, globally distributed workforce (known as Workers) to perform tasks.

So as you can see there are 2 sides to MTurk. The businesses that want the work done (Requesters) and the people who perform the tasks (Workers).

There are over half a million Workers on MTurk worldwide according to Wikipedia. And anyone can join MTurk if you come from any of the countries below:

Barbados, Chile, Canada, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Puerto Rico, United States, US Minor Islands, US Virgin Islands.

Botswana, Mayotte, Réunion, South Africa.

Asia and Pacific

Australia, French Polynesia, French Southern Territories, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Qatar, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan.

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom.

What Are Hits?

Hits is an abbreviation for “Human Intelligence Tasks”.

Virtually anyone can complete Hits on the Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) web site using the skills they already have and according to their own schedule.

The only requirement to complete the tasks and collect payment from Requesters is a computer or other device connected to the Internet and to be at least 18-years-old.

Earning money through the MTurk web site is as easy as searching for hits on the site, accepting those hits, completing them, and collecting the reward once the hit is approved by the Requester.

As you can see from the screenshot below the payment for hits are extremely low. From $0.01 to $20.00.

Requesters have the opportunity to approve completed hits before having to pay for them. There are many ways Requesters can approve hits, ranging from auto-approving them sight unseen, to auto-approving them when they receive two answers to the same hit that match, to manually approving some or all completed hits.

Requesters can specify that people who work on their tasks must first complete a qualification test, thus giving Requesters the opportunity to vet the skill level of the people working on their hits beforehand.

Over time people who do work on the Amazon Mechanical Turk web site will have statistics associated with them based on how accurately they have completed other hits. These statistics, such as the percentage of hits they’ve submitted that have been approved, allow Requesters to specify further that only Workers with certain qualifications can work on their hits.

After previewing some of the higher paying tasks it seems nearly all of them want Workers with certain qualifications. These can be completed on the MTurk website. Or want a Worker to have hundreds of approved hits behind them.

Below is a typical task for Workers to complete. This one pays $0.02. WOW.

*NOTE* Some Requesters are in the habit of not approving hits. So always check out from other Worker’s before completing a hit for any new Requester to see if that particular one is doing this often.

The system will automatically approve your work if a requester has not approved it within 30-days.

MTurk has a low payment threshold of $1 which you can exchange for Amazon gift cards. If you reach the $10 mark you can choose for the money to be transferred to your bank account.

Now you are not going to become a millionaire using MTurk but it is a way to earn a little extra cash in your spare time. Saying that you will have to spend most of your spare time to even get to $10.

Positive and Negative Reviews

I have found many negative reviews on a site named Sitejabber but to be fair there are many good reviews also. So it’s a bit of a mixed bag when it comes down to negative and positive reviews.

One of the main negative reviews was about getting accounts closed or not being able to open an account at all.

Anyway, I have picked out a couple of reviews by their star rating that they have been given for you to read. See the screenshots below.

MTurk is very similar to another review I did for micro-workers. See the review here.

Is The Amazon Mechanical Turk A Scam – Conclusion

I am on the fence with MTurk. It is not a scam by any means. I think some of the negative reviews are from people who cannot join MTurk because of their country location. (See valid countries above). And the review above is just bad luck.

All in all, if you are willing to receive cents for your work then go ahead and join. But be aware of Requesters that do not approve your work for no apparent reason.

However, saying that take a look at this video of someone who claims he can earn $15 per hour.

Do I recommend MTurk?

I would love to know if you are or have been an MTurk Worker. Please reply in the comments section below to let me know your exact experiences using MTurk.

Choose a Better Way To Make Money Online

When it comes down to making money online you can choose to be a worker or a business owner. They both require time and effort to earn money from.

There is one difference though being a worker you will only earn from the jobs you do repetitively. Being a business owner you can earn from recurring income.

What do I mean by recurring income?

Recurring income or passive income is something you do once and still, get income coming in months down the track or forever in some cases.

I receive a recurring income by being a member of a site called Wealthy Affiliate. It has not only taught me everything about internet marketing but it also has a very nice little affiliate commission structure too.

Whereby if you refer others to the program to learn step by step about internet marketing you too can get others to join to do the same and receive a recurring income.
